Established on February 8, 1900, the Springfield Park District became the second organized park district in the state of Illinois. This milestone played a key role in providing the Springfield community with designated spaces for recreation, leisure, and conservation.
The District was created in response to the growing recognition of the importance of public parks in enhancing the quality of life, promoting health, and beautifying the community. From its inception, the Springfield Park District has been dedicated to creating and maintaining accessible, vibrant spaces for everyone to enjoy.
Throughout the years, the District has expanded to offer a wide range of parks, facilities, and programs, evolving with the changing needs and interests of the community. Managed by a publicly elected board, which includes a President and six Trustees serving four-year terms, the Springfield Park District continues to flourish as an independent municipal agency, enriching lives through parks, people, and possibilities.
