The Hoogland Center for the Arts is proud to present Master Class by Terrence McNally, the winner of the 1996 Tony Award® for Best Play. The play will be presented in the Peggy Ryder Theatre on the Third Floor February 4-16 and 21-23. Master Class will be directed by Joe-Michael Jackson and Ginny Racette.

Master Class is a virtuosic exploration of art, ego, and the pursuit of perfection. In the waning years of her life and with her career far behind her, opera diva Maria Callas retreats into memories of acclaim and adversity while contending with her students during a funny and brutal master class in singing.

As Callas instructs each of her ambitious students, she reflects on the path that led to various moments in her life. She recounts the rise and fall of her career and the sacrifices she made along the way to get her to the top. Playwright McNally masterfully balances the severe moments with lighthearted punches that capture Callas’ dry sense of humor.

Master Class was awarded both a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding New Play and a Tony Award for Best Play in 1996. It earned Zoe Caldwell a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play and Audra McDonald a Tony Award for Featured Actress in a Play that same year.

The Hoogland Center for the Arts production will star Aasne Vigesaa as Maria Callas, with Brooke Seacrist, Jordan DePatis and Alyssa Shultz as her students.
