F Visit Springfield and The Pharmacy Gallery and Art Space announce The Road That Takes You: Springfield, Illinois Edition A Route 66 Centennial Commission Certified Project | Springfield, Illinois | Visit Springfield

March 18, 2026, Springfield, IL - Visit Springfield and The Pharmacy Gallery and Art Space are excited to announce the addition of an exhibition by Route 66 Photographer and Storyteller, David Schwartz.  Schwartz is the photographer behind the 2026 USPS Route 66 Centennial stamps.

The exhibit body of work will include a curated collection of photographs which David spent significant time planning, scouting, reflecting the true character of these iconic Springfield, IL places.  Featured locations in the exhibit include, the Cozy Dog Drive In, Maid Rite Sandwich Shop, and Bill Shea/Shea’s Gas Station.

The exhibition also includes a portrait component focused on individuals deeply rooted in Springfield’s Route 66 culture. These portraits are part of the developing Keepers of the Mother Road series documenting the people whose dedication continues to sustain the road today.

“My hope with The Road That Takes You is simple.  I want people to feel something when they see these photographs.  I want them to travel the road themselves and experience the places and the people that keep it alive.  Route 66 is not something you simply observe.  It is something you step into.  It is not a museum piece.  It is a living road.  And once it finds its way into your bones, the road has a way of taking you somewhere you never expected.” David Schwartz, Pics on Route 66

A ribbon cutting and grand opening is planned for Friday, March 27 at 3pm with the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce at The Pharmacy Gallery and Art Space, located at 623 E Adams Street, Springfield, IL.   Artist David Schwartz will be at the event for a meet and greet and media interviews.  If you wish to set up an advance phone interview, please contact Amy Beadle, Marketing Manager, Visit Springfield at amy.beadle@springfield.il.us to make arrangements.
